History of Sports Massage and the SMA
Sports massage has developed immensely over the past ten years and its demand from sports participants has now become widely accepted. In the preparation for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, the Sports Massage Association (SMA) was launched to ensure those who are members are appropriately qualified and educated and that standards of professionalism are met to include accountability. Since then SMA membership is a prerequisite for those practitioners working with top athletes. You may now hear at interviews with athletes on the television that they are going off to have a massage and it is now incorporated in many athletes' and clubs regimes.
Affiliations with sports clubs can be arranged and links between coaches, managers, masseurs and other health care professionals can work very successfully bringing results for each athlete and the team or club as a whole.
My aim is not only to continue supporting this crucial connection with elite sport, but also bring the benefits of sports massage to anyone who is active be it in their job or leisure time.
Along with my SMA membership, which involves a file showing continuous professional development and being part of a national register, I have full insurance of public liability and indemnity. These components safeguard and promote the health of clients using RPM Sports Massage.
